It’s a new year, a new decade, and time to try a new hairstyle. Whether you change up your look every month or just want to try something new and push the boundaries here are five hairstyles that should be on your list to try in 2020.

[Oh by the way 👋🏾, if you’re thinking about getting a protective style, our short film, Pretty Shouldn’t Hurt, is a must-watch. Also learn all about safe protective styling here.]

1. Ghana Braided Bun

Whether low and swept to the side, or worn high like a crown, Ghana braided buns make a statement. Known for their tight twists, there are several variations of the bun to try. You can dress them up with gold cuffs or add colorful yarn to show off your creativity. Ghana braided buns can last up to 5 weeks and are relatively low maintenance.

2. Waist Length (or longer) Passion Twists

Speaking of statements, add some length to the classic passion twist. You’ll typically see passion twists that go to the middle of your back, but ask your stylist for twists 28 inches or longer. This bohemian inspired style is perfect for any time of year and very versatile, but you’ll see them more often in the summer. Unclear as to what passion twists are? We’ve got you covered. The extra length could cost you a little extra time and money – but it’s 2020 why not treat yourself!

3. Goddess Braids with Cornrows

Want two great styles in one? Try Goddess braids with cornrows. Mixing the two can result in really intricate patterns that can be worn in a ponytail, swept to the side, or in a bun. You can even play with the size of the braids, get jumbo goddess braids with delicate cornrows or vice versa – the possibilities are endless!

4. Short Chunky Box Braid Bob

This is one of the trendiest styles you’ll see on the list. In 2019, we saw the resurgence of the bob, and we’re not mad at it, but let’s step it up a notch. The short chunky box braid bob is sure to turn heads –  and it shouldn’t take a ton of time in the stylists chair! Ask for chunkier braids to create the look, leave the ends blunt and secure them with rubber bands for a bohemian, edgy, futuristic look. Add color, cuffs or yarn to really show your creativity.

5. Fulani Braids with Leave Out

Fulani braids were one of the trendiest styles of 2019, but they aren’t new to the braiding scene. Alicia Keys rocked them in 2001 and it’s only fitting that we bring them into 2020. This time try Fulani braids with leave out. You can have the delicate, beautiful braiding and bead work in the front and your natural hair or weave in the back. The style gives you versatility and a unique take on a classic style.

From braided buns to Fulani braids, 2020 is all about pushing the limits. Take care of your hair, be creative, and have fun. It’s time for a fresh start and nothing says “New Year, New Me, Who this?” more than a new hairstyle. Trying any of these hairstyles yourself?
