Ask an Expert: Any Tips for Finding the Right Wig?

  • by Staff
  • Ask an Expert / Care / Wigs

Our expert this month is Hadiiya Barbel, Emmy Award Winning Celebrity Hair Designer and Creator of the Crown. Hadiiya Barbel has designed iconic looks for celebrities that include Wendy Williams, supermodel IMAN, Real Housewives of Atlanta Kim Zolciak, Star Jones and many more.

Question:   What are some of your tips for finding the right wig (or crown) if budget isn’t an issue?

Answer:       When buying a Crown and budget isn’t an issue, the best things to look for are the following:

  1. The correct fit of the actual cap. Make sure that the cap size fits comfortably. With most high-end wigs you do have an option to have it custom measured to your head. There is also “ready to wear” hair as an option which is usually a medium size one size fits all cap.
  1. Quality of the hair is everything! No one wants hair that shed’s and gets tangled! You want to use virgin unprocessed hair so that it can be colored to your desired and this hair is where all cuticles are going in the same direction so this reduces the amount of breakage and will prevent matting.
  1. Know what kind of style that you are looking to achieve and make sure that it works with the wig you’re interested in purchasing.  For example, if you want flexibility, don’t buy a wig that’s machine made; a multi-direction hand tied is best.

Overall there are many options and the best thing to do is to see a specialist if possible and have what I call a design session with an expert to get the best look and fit for you.

Remember, if you have questions for our experts you can submit them on our submissions page.  For more information on Hadiiya and her collection, please visit HadiiyaBarbel.com. Hadiiya’s new boutique, which carries her line of Crowns along with other Goddess adornments such as waist beads and jewelry, will open in New York City this month.
