Our expert, Anu Prestonia – owner of Khamit Kinks Natural Hair Salon in Brooklyn, NY takes on another reader’s question.

Question:  What’s the best way to retain hair length while transitioning?

Answer:

The best way to grow hair to its maximum length is to trim ends every six weeks or so.   I also recommend wearing either protective styles or sets like, roller sets, flexi-rod sets, straw sets etc. so that there is no need for daily grooming.  Daily grooming when one is transitioning puts stress on the two different textures and causes breakage of the weaker texture.  The weaker texture will be the chemically processed hair and the ends.  The hair closest to the scalp is the strongest especially when it has had no chemical straighteners or color added to it.
