Question:  Hi Tym, I’ve finally made the decision to stop using chemical relaxers on my hair and need to decide between doing the Big Chop or transitioning. What are the pros and cons of each?

Answer:

In my opinion the Big Chop is better than the transition method from relaxed to natural. When you cut all of the relaxed hair, you don’t have to deal with the issues of dry scalp, product build up and breakage, which is common with transitioning.  Cons to the Big Chop is that you lose your length, where as when you transition you get to keep your length. The transition method also allows you to keep track of how much your hair has grown from the line of demarcation between relaxed ends and natural base.
