Going natural is the best decision I ever made. Retaining length and learning to take care of my 4c kinky hair pattern has been nothing but a head-turning experience. When it comes to your natural hair there are plenty of hairstyles you can rock. But do you know that the easiest way to get a perfect head of box braids, twists or faux locs is by crocheting? Using the crochet method for these styles saves time because you’re using hair that’s already braided, twisted or loc’d! We have an in-depth look at crochets braiding here and we weigh the pros and cons of installing styles like box braids via crochets here. When using this method for braids et al, the key is finding the best crochet hair for the style you’re looking to achieve. So, via our favorite vloggers, we’ve rounded up a variety of looks and hair used to crochet your next box braids, twists or locs!

A few considerations:

  • The number of packs you use depends on your desired volume. In general, you might have to buy between three to eight packs to achieve the fullness you want. Head’s up: a lot of crochet hair are now sold in bundles of 4 – 8 packs.
  • Be sure to leave enough space in between each piece of crochet hair to avoid a look that is too voluminous.
  • Remember to moisturize your own hair regularly (more on maintaining your hair here) to avoid shedding resulting from dryness and breakage once you remove your crochets.
  • But don’t over do it with product. Minimize product usage on your hair, so it’s not weighed down, and use a satin bonnet nightly.
