Editor’s Note: Last week we spotlighted Black women in Italy that are carving out a space for themselves in popular media. This week we’re taking a look at their counterparts in France.

What She Does: Born Nadia Mladjao in France’s Comoros Islands, afro soul singer Imany first began her career as a model, signing with Ford Models Europe, before starting her singing career in 2008. Grabbing the attention of music label, Think Zik Imani translated as “faith” in Swahili, went on to wow European audiences with her debut album, “Shape of a Broken Heart” in 2011, selling over 5 million records in Greece, France and Poland. The twelve-song track boasts all English lyrics and critically acclaimed, infectious melodies, perfect for a cozy day in. Check out the beautiful video for her song “You Will Never Know.”

Signature Look: Imany’s go-to look is a colorful, patterned turban wrap, her bangs often curled or braided out in the front, for a more fun look.
