Editor’s Note: Last week we spotlighted Black women in Italy that are carving out a space for themselves in popular media. This week, we’re taking a look at their counterparts in France.

What She Does: Irma, a Cameroonian singer-songwriter living in France, began her career by posting videos of herself singing on YouTube. Covering popular songs such as “Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat and performing a duet with The Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am, singing The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” she would later gain the attention of Michael Goldman, co- founder of My Major Company music label, signing her first record contract in 2007. Her first single, “I Know” hit number 2 on France’s music charts, while her debut album, “Letter to the Lord” reached an impressive one million in sales. Check out the video for “I Know,” one of Irma’s popular songs.

Signature Look: For the most part, Irma covers her no fuss TWA with beanies, slouched in the back for a stylish, tom-boy look.
