Box braids are probably one of the most practical hairstyles around. Once they’re in, they’re low maintenance. They’re a protective style, great to wear on vacation, especially if you’re planning on swimming. They’re easy and versatile to style, however we’re typically turning to them for boho and casual looks, and not so much for special occasions (i.e. weddings, prom, or a special night out). As great as box braids are for keeping your ‘do dope, they’re equally as good for glaming things up.
A handful of celebs (pre-Zendaya Coleman’s red carpet faux locs) have been showing off their braided tresses on the red carpet. Here’s a little hairspiration in case you’ve been looking for elegant ways to wear your box braids.
Keep It Simple.
Box braids are truly a get-up-and-go hairstyle. Singer Solange Knowles and actress Zoe Kravitz have both been spotted donning long thin braids on the carpet, either with a middle part or simply all back. (Click image to enlarge).
Sweep them to the Side
Tia Mowry ‘brought it’ back in 2014 at the Selma New York premiere. She wore a white foot-length dress/suite and swept her long thin braids to the side.
Half-Up-Half-Down
Singer Keri Hilson has stepped onto many a red carpet sporting uber long box braids. Typically she wears them in an elegant half-up-half-down look, with the top-half gracefully pulled back or twisted at the sides. Former Miss World Agbani Darego, was also spotted with the same glam look last year at the 2014 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Get Funkier
Or you can stand out even more like singer FKA Twigs and sport a box braid, baby hair, double-bun medley with a strappy pant dress.
