from the editor: can we get much higher

This isn’t about Kanye’s Dark Fantasy. This is about our dreams and who we think we can be. To me life is all about growing and blooming, just like flowers do, except unlike a flower, it’s not always clear when a person has fully blossomed, which is why we should always ask ourselves, “can we get much higher?” Can we go further? Can we be better? Have we fully realized our potential?

I’m not sure if we ever get clear answers to those questions. I’m not sure if you every really know when you are all that you can be as a person. But you definitely can know when you’re not. There’s usually a nagging feeling in your gut or a strong emotional response to your friends or peers that you see achieving things that you haven’t done but realize you could. Thus we’re dedicating this month to Black possibility. We’ll explore areas that we can potentially grow in. We’ll be looking at this quite literally with hair growth, disproving the age old myth that Black women can’t have long hair. We’ll also be looking at growth in an industrial sense by taking a look at one African nation whose economic growth has many economists and big beauty brands placing financial bets on its future.

An entrepreneur at heart, I founded Unruly in 2013 after spending six great years in advertising. I’m über lazy when it comes to doing my hair so I’m always looking for easy and quick ways to care and style my hair.
