I know we’re already two weeks into January (I’ve been on a petite hiatus), but Happy New Year y’all AND happy MLK Day to our readers in America! 2014 has come and gone and we’ve got nothing but possibility ahead. We’ve been working pretty hard at Un-ruly to bring you some exciting things in 2015 and we can’t wait to share everything we’ve got in store.
One of the first things we’re excited about is our editorial theme for this year. In our first year, 2013, we set the foundation for our new era and last year we explored The Many Shades of Black. Coming out of that exploration we realized that we looked at Blackness primarily through an American perspective but Blackness extends much much further. It’s global. So this year we’re asking you to Come Away With Us as we immerse ourselves in the global Black experience. We’re dedicating each issue of Un-ruly to a specific country in Africa or the African Diaspora with the hope of expanding our understanding of Black culture. We’re starting in Europe, then heading down to the Motherland, crossing the Atlantic to South America and ending the year in North America.
Our first destination is France, the country I’ve now been living in for two years and was recently hit with tragedy. We’ll be drawing style inspiration from the streets of Paris in the next couple weeks but will also be taking a look at the tension between France’s immigrant population and it’s natives. What’s more, we’ll be exploring beauty in the city of sophistication and glamour, with the launch of our new documentary series, Pretty. Check out the trailer below. Pretty takes a look at ideas of beauty across the globe, starting with Paris. It’s another of the exciting things we have in store for you guys this year. The first episode will be released this Thursday. So subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss it!
What I’ve mentioned so far is just the tip of the iceberg, there’s definitely lots more to come. So stay tuned. It’s going to be a pretty Un-ruly year!
