Our expert this month is Anu Prestonia – owner of Khamit Kinks Natural Hair Salon in Brooklyn, NY.

Question:

Hi Anu!  What’s the best way to detangle 4C hair? Is it realistic to expect to not have any knots in 4C hair because I have A LOT of tiny knots on individual strands of my hair?

Answer:

The best way to detangle tightly coiled or kinky hair or any type of hair is to comb it from the ends and working your way towards the roots slowly and gingerly.  This process is made all the more easier if the hair is wet and coated with conditioner.  Do this section by section.  Each section that has been combed out can be twisted or braided to help stretch out the texture until you’ve gone through the entire head.
