– As told to Ellen Haile

London-based presenter and blogger Yinka Bokinni originally found her love for presenting when she snagged a position as a radio broadcaster for RinseFM, a UK-based music station. Her outgoing and fun-loving nature has allowed her the opportunity to work as a presenter for the likes of Lovedough, Google+ and Acoustic Afternoon.

work

How did you get started?

I auditioned for a show on RinseFM and the rest is history!

What’s an average day like?

Every day is different! Whether it’s doing my radio show, DJing at an event, writing a blog [post] or going to industry events, I never know how my week is going to go. That’s the beauty of working freelance.

Why do you do it?

When I was younger, I always wanted a talent. My sister can sing, my best friend can paint and my aunt plays the harp (LOL). I was never particularly good at anything other than being myself. I am my talent and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ups and downs you sometimes face on the job:

I don’t have an agent or anyone in particular looking out for me. I have essentially done everything myself and that is the hardest thing because I’m nowhere near where I want to be. This is just the beginning.

What’s your greatest achievement so far?

I think being on radio five days a week… that feels amazing. And my website YinkaBokinni.com is my baby.

What might be next for you?

You know, I have no idea?! I literally take every day/week/year as it comes and just try to be positive and face every challenge head on.

hair

What are your top 5 go-to hair tips?

  • Hmmm, natural is best, even blow-drying is a bit rubbish!
  • Protective styles can save your (hair’s) life.
  • Lay those edges!
  • That’s only three, I’m kind of low-maintenance…ooh, trim those ends! There is no point holding on to dead hair.
  • And switch it up as much as possible. A new ‘do can make you feel like a new lady!

Fun fact: I have a law degree, don’t eat cooked fruit and am addicted to eBay!
