 – by Perri Lembo

Miss Jessie’s newest styling lotion claims to create soft, touchable curls with definition but without a crunch. It’s meant to be used as a styling product during a wash-and-go, but can also be used for twisting.

main takeaway

  • Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls has good slip and is a great detangler.
  • Hair is left soft, fluffy, and expanded. And it also provides a great shine.
  • It does, however, appear to be more effective for those with a looser curl.
  • It’s scent is reminiscent of Downy fabric softener/drier sheets, which some people love and some hate. But all agree that it is has a strong scent.
  • It has its share of unnatural ingredients (see list below).
  • At about $20.00 a bottle, some find this styling lotion a little too pricey.
  • All in all, many people found the product to be satisfactory, but not worth paying full price.

what the manufacturer says

The name says it all. Miss Jessie’s PILLOW SOFT CURLS™ is the new styling lotion that borrows fabric care technology and marries it to haircare. It is perfect for achieving static-free, big, soft, curly hair that we all dream about. If you don’t want ramen noodle definition and instead want a larger, expanded, fluffy curl then PILLOW SOFT CURLS™ is for you! It’s the first “fabric softener” type styling lotion that will leave your curls clothesline fresh and fluffy soft. You will see that PILLOW SOFT CURLS™ is so easy to apply. It spreads so smoothly and feels as light as a feather on your curls.

Great for: Wavy, Curly, Tight Curly, and Transitioners.

 what the bloggers said

I dislike the vast chemical ingredients, the price, the smell (and the fact that it lingers for so long) and the non-thrilling results it yields. Basically, the only positive thing about this product was the slip factor.”

I really like the results, my curls look shiny, well moisturized and have great definition! Although I know ‘definition’ is sort of the opposite of what in claims, I still like my results. I will say that while I do like my results I’m not completely sold just yet on whether or not I’d purchase it again (especially at regular price). There are just so many other products out that produce similar results at a fraction of the cost.

what the commenters said

I have a terrible red Jew fro that is thin and not shiny… Unless I use Pillow Soft. Then I get actual ringlets, kind of spiraled, no fuzz, and some shine. It’s not crunchy or ramen-like at all.”

Sadly, this product left tiny flakes in my hair that looked like a light dusting of dandruff in my hair. I’ve used this product 6 times: without a leave-in, with a leave-in, a little bit without a leave-in, a little bit with a leave-in, a lot with a leave-in, and a lot without a leave-in. The results were still the same–white specks left in my hair. My hair was soft, full, had a light hold though, and, I loved the scent. Just wished it didn’t leave a residue in my hair.”

The scent is quite strong – it smells exactly like liquid fabric softener. It even looks a little bit like it too. I also had a bit of build-up from it the next day, but I didn’t mind that so much because I just re-wetted my hair a bit and used up whatever product was left in my hair from the day before.
