Should I put any hair product in my hair before and after putting them in box braids?

Before getting box braids, the most important products to use are a good hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Most braids are done using synthetic hair which can dry your natural hair while braided. A good burnishing (polishing) hair serum such as Moroccan Oil can also be used on the hair prior to braiding. It provides hydration as well as nourishment for the hair.

After installing box braids, misting the hair with a spray leave-in conditioner is an easy way to keep the hair healthy and hydrated. You can also use a small amount of an oil, such as coconut oil to run along your braids (not scalp) following the conditioner.

What products do you recommend using on my scalp when wearing braids?

While in box braids keeping the scalp clean is very important. There are dry shampoos and foam shampoos that can be applied directly to the scalp for cleansing. The scalp also needs nourishment while braided. Herbal Complex by Design Essentials provides moisture when applied to the scalp and can also be applied to hair. Therapeutics, also by Design Essentials, is an anti-itch scalp treatment that can be applied to the scalp at anytime.
