Product Review: Silk Elements Straight Edges Edging Gel

  • by Remi Powell
  • Products / Reviews / Styling Products

Why read review after review when you can just read one? We’ve “combed” the web to get the verdict on Silk Elements Straight Edges Edging Gel.

Silk Elements’ Straight Edges edging gel claims to give you a long-lasting, strong hold and shine. But here’s what the ladies that tried it have to say.

The Verdict

After trying several edge control gels, many of its users agree that this one’s a keeper! Most users love how a little goes a long way with this gel. It really does give a flawless and smooth look to your edges. The scent is light and pleasant, and it isn’t overpowering. It won’t flake or crack unless you apply too much to your hair. Silk Elements’ Straight Edges edging gel isn’t greasy, so it won’t weigh your hair down. The gel also controls your edges for as long as you want it to. Even though the gel only comes in the 3.5 oz size, it’s really inexpensive, so you can always make a quick run to the store to restock! As long as you don’t use too much of it at once, you won’t experience any sticky, flaky, or super stiff strands.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Long-last edge control
  • Gives a natural sheen
  • Doesn’t damage hair
  • Smooth and sleek look
  • Lightweight
  • Non-greasy
  • A little goes a long way

Cons

  • Only comes in 3.5 oz size
  • Not sold in many stores
  • May flake
  • May feel sticky

What the Manufacturer Say

Silk Elements Straight Edges Edging Gel provides a long-lasting, strong hold and shine. [It] provides a long-lasting, strong hold and conditioning shine to sleek styles. This lightweight formula is a fusion between a gel, pomade and wax resulting in a non-greasy, non-flaking and non-sticky finish. Works excellent for natural, relaxed or weaved hair to smooth and define a sleek style.

What 3A-3C Users Say

It has a thick, clear consistency, and does wonders at laying down my edges! What I love most about this product is the fact that unlike gel, it doesn’t cause the hair to revert. And, unlike pomade or a wax stick, it doesn’t make the hair feel greasy. Instead, it just lays the edges down with a slight, non-greasy hold. …After a few days of use, you’ll probably want to wash it out because it can build up, quick, so I would suggest it be used sparingly.

It’s a nice thick formula, the hold lasts a long time, it has a clear consistency, it also leaves no flakes or white build-up (at least not for me) but I also coat my hair with castor oil before and after use of any product. I have to order two or three because I use this for my entire head sometimes. I recommend this for 3C-MBL hair that gets a lot of single strand knots.

I love love love this product I have been transitioning since August 2013 and I put this on my edges and it just slicks them down; it does not harden my hair and I don’t get the white flakes. It is not something that I have to use everyday because it works so great. I have the hardest hair to straighten; it is super curly and coarse so for this to work its just awesome. – MsTori

What 4A-4C Users Say

Can you say straight edge HEAVEN????? My, My, My, My . . . this Silk Elements Straight Edges Edging gel had me at “hello!” No caking, No flaking, No build up, and a friendly ingredient list including glycerin high on the list! Past due relaxer? no Problem! Non-greasy! Non-sticky! It is described as a fusion between a gel, pomade and wax. Well after a day or so, the hold may disappear so remember the Luscious product by Bee Mine Products? You can use this Luscious cream moisturizer to reactivate the Edging Gel without re-applying the edging gel.

– pHenomenalhairstylist

Pretty Awesome never on shelf when you see it you better stock up! …This gel also smells AMAZING!!!! …. It could be a little bit stronger on the hold then again that may be due to the fact I used it in an area with longer hair. I do have 4b/4c hair… Overall it is a great product I have stocked up on three in one week due to the fact that it sells very quickly.
