The technique used depends on your hair texture, length, and desired outcome. Over time, these beginner styles mature into fully-formed locs. People love Starter Locs because they mark the beginning of a long-term, low-maintenance, and meaningful hair journey — one that reflects individuality, culture, and care.

How long does the installation take?
Timing depends on the size you choose, the thickness of your hair and the speed of the stylist are also important factors. But we generally recommend blocking out the day (about 8 hours) for starter locs.

What method will you use to start my locs?

We typically use comb coils, two-strand twists, or braids for the start. But you can make a note of which method you prefer when booking. You can also discuss the method with your stylist so your hair texture, length, and the size can be taken into account.

Can I color my hair before or after starting locs?
Coloring is possible, but it’s best done before starting or after your locs have stabilized. If you color early, keep it gentle and follow a strengthening routine.

What’s the minimum hair length?
Generally, 3–4 inches is a comfortable starting point. Shorter lengths can work in some cases. If you’re unsure whether your hair is long enough, text us a photo 212-461-0928.
