It’s a brand-new year which means we’re rolling out fresh and exciting new content on un-ruly.com. This month we’re kicking off “Un’covered” – a column that spotlights anything worth discovering in popular culture, entertainment, fashion, beauty, music, and more!

Given this year’s editorial theme: The Many Shades of Black, our Un’cover picks this month highlight women of color who are shaking up popular media.

meet sasheera zamata!

Since comedian and actress Maya Rudolph left the long-running comedy sketch series, Saturday Night Live (SNL) six years ago, there has been a huge lack in diversity, especially with regard to African-American female cast members on the show. That all changes when Sasheera Zamata joins the cast on January 18th.  Sasheera’s background is in improvisational comedy and is pretty hilarious from what we’ve seen so far. Be sure to tune into the new season when rapper, Drake hosts and performs.

(1)ne drop: shifting the lens on race by yaba blay

This literary gem by Drexel University professor, Yaba Blay, seeks to challenge narrow perceptions of Blackness as both an identity and lived reality. What exactly is Blackness? What does it mean to be Black? Is Blackness a matter of biology or consciousness? Who determines who is Black and who is not? Who’s Black, who’s not, and who cares? The book features the perspectives of 60 contributors representing 25 different countries and countries of origin. It combines candid narratives with simple, yet striking, portraiture. This book provides living testimony to the diversity of Blackness. Purchase it on Amazon.

elle magazine’s 2014 women in tv issue

Yes! ELLE Magazine’s Women in TV February issue will be hitting stands soon and we’ll be picking up multiple copies for two BIG reasons! 1) It’s our favorite funny girl, Mindy Kaling’s first major fashion magazine cover (she’s on one of four covers) and reason 2). actress and friend of Un’ruly Xosha Roquemore (Precious, The Mindy Project) is featured inside alongside some of the most talented fresh faces in the biz.  The issue hits stands on January 14th.
