Black women have been rocking crochets for decades, and it’s easy to see why. In addition to offering a lot of versatility, crocheting is relatively simple (therefore beginner proof) and isn’t as time consuming to install as other protective styles. What’s more, given that crochet hair is relatively cheap, it’s also one of the more affordable protective style options. And if that’s not enough, crochets are also the perfect way to keep your natural tresses tucked away and protected whilst replicating your natural texture or opting for a completely different look.

If you’re looking to install some kinky, curly or wavy crochet hair for a natural look, keep reading to find out which hair works and how some of our favorite vloggers are installing the look themselves.

Here are photos of some of the looks we rounded up. More below.

Before you begin though, here are a few things to consider:

  • Braid or braidless? Most of the vloggers we’ve mentioned below cornrow their natural hair and install the crochets onto the braids. However it’s possible to use twists, banded hair or even a wig cap to achieve the same look. When using a wig cap you can crochet whilst the cap sits on a mannequin head (like vlogger TastePINK, video below) or on your head (like vlogger The Threat Life below). Or you can try the no-cornrow crochet method.
  • Where will your parting sit? If you’re choosing to install your crochets using cornrows, think about where you’d want to part your hair — and develop your braiding pattern from their. Usually all-back cornrows tend to work best. We go into braiding patterns for crochets here.
  • Single or double knot? Many of the vloggers double knot the hair for more security but depending on the texture (the kinkier the texture, the more secure) you could even get away with only doing one loop. Bear in mind that it’s tricky to remove the crochet if you’ve used double knots.
  • Natural leave-out. If you’re using hair that is close to your natural texture, you can leave out some of your own hair for a smoother blend with the crocheted hair (see Jess Monique Thomas’ video below).
  • Consider the volume you want before you begin the installation process — how you space out each piece of hair will determine how full the look is.

Outre X-pressions hair is a firm favourite amongst vloggers. The hair is easy to work with, looks natural and comes separated into pre-looped pieces, which makes the installation process so much simpler for you. The Janet Collection and Freetress also make an appearance in a few of the videos but there are definitely so many other brands for you to try. So, ready for some crochet inspiration?
