– As told to Tamara Pridgett

SUITE Public Relations began as “Fantasy Plaza” when Janelle Langford was a child. Janelle has since seen her imaginary business manifest into an established public relations firm. Working with clients ranging from Miss Jessie’s to Saks Fifth avenue Janelle has established herself as a formidable Fashion and Beauty Publicist in New York City.

work

How did you get started?

I’ve always had a love for fashion and beauty. When I was younger my mom created an imaginary fashion company to keep me busy. Decades later I brought the playtime to life. When I founded my company we were a fashion entertainment company, producing fashion shows and fashion geared events. Organically, the publicity element of the business grew and now we are a full service firm.

What’s an average day like?

Every day is different. Usually I’m working on PR strategies for clients, researching industry trends, emerging designers, sending samples to editors, reading WWD, brainstorming with my staff etc. I usually start my day at 7am and wrap about 3am (sleep is for wimps).

Why do you do it?

Initially, it was for my love of fashion. Now, eight years after the conception of my firm, it’s because of my love for business. I love commerce. I love the process of creating and implementation.

Ups and downs you sometimes face on the job:

Public Relations is a process and at times, a waiting game. As a publicist I want to garner the very best press for my clients. At times the waiting can be agonizing to see that top tier pitch come to fruition. But when the press is delivered, it’s an extremely invigorating feeling. It’s a sense of accomplishment. Then… on to the next press hit.

Your greatest achievement so far?

Besides the fact that my firm was solely founded by me and I’ve been in business for 8 years without any financial backing, my greatest achievement would be getting my client on the Oprah Winfrey show for the last season and another placement in Italian Vogue.

What might be next for you?

We’re are beginning to work with more brands internationally. I would love to open an office in London.

hair

What are your top 5 go-to hair tips?

  • Wand curling your hair is quick and allows curls to last all day.
  • Co-wash whenever possible.
  • A little product goes a long way. Watch your usage.
  • Never panic. It’s hair. It will grow back.
  • Healthy hair starts from within. Be sure to take your vitamins paired with clean eating.

Fun Fact: Your dreams are in fact valid. I have a chemistry degree and worked in Healthcare for several years before starting my company. The things that you are passionate about will always surface and outweigh.
