How To Be A… Beauty Entrepreneur: Myleik Teele

Fitting for this month’s Business Issue, our “Working Girl” Myleik Teele is the Founder & CEO of the subscription beauty service curlBOX — an affordable and effortless way to explore new hair products, hand-selected and delivered to your doorstep every month. It’s like the gift that just keeps on giving to faithful naturals everywhere!

Stats:

Name:               Myleik Teele

Age:                   34

Location:          Atlanta, GA | Born and raised in Los Angeles

Profession:       Founder & CEO, curlBOX

Work:

How did you get started?

I started working as a teen.  College, internships and then landed a job as the assistant to the VP of Music (Dvora Englefield) at BWR Public Relations in Beverly Hills.  I then worked with Travis Barker after that and then moved to Atlanta where I started my first company (Art Of Facts PR) and then curlBOX.

After spending a little over a year working with a few beauty brands with products designed for naturally curly hair and going to hair shows (World Natural Hair Show) and a few meet-ups, I wondered how I could provide someone with the same experience that I had without the hassle. What if someone had access to all of the products that I did and got to try them first? Like many, I’d watch the YouTube videos and read the blogs and watch someone with hair that looks JUST like mine swear by a product only for it to not work on me. curlBOX essentially gives you the opportunity to try it first and if you like it, you buy it.

What’s an average day like?

Busy.  Very busy.   Emails, phone calls, social media, meetings, travel, testing hair products… you name it. No one day is the same.

Why do you do it?

Because I want to.  Because I can.  Because I always knew that I could.

Ups and downs you sometimes face on the job:

Ups and downs are a part of life in general.  There will always be good days and bad days … Highs and lows. That’s why you never take it too personal.  I take compliments and complaints the same … Lightly.

Your greatest achievement so far?  Personal development.  Maintaining my sanity. :)

What might be next for you?  Not sure.  We have quite a few things on deck for 2014.  Stay tuned!

Hair:

What are your top 5 go-to hair tips?

  1. I love an ACV rinse [Apple Cider Vinegar rinse].
  2. I swear by Elasta QP Mango Butter for anyone just starting the natural journey.
  3. Every girl needs the Ouidad double detangler.
  4. Steam using the Huetiful Hair Steamer and
  5. I’m deeply in love with Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Refresher Spray these days.

Fun Fact:  Myleik still holds a national record in the 4×400 meter relay with her teammates and was a track athlete all of her childhood and through her teens.
