Editor’s Note: Fancy a trip across the pond? Join us as we continue our spotlight series this week on English Black women who are carving out a space for themselves in popular media.

What She Does: FKA twigs, a singer of Jamaican, English and Spanish descent, moved to London from Gloucestershire, England when she was only 17 to pursue a career as a dancer, self-releasing her first EP in 2012. She got her name “twigs” from the sound her joints made when they cracked, adding the “FKA” (“Formerly Known As”) when another artist with the same name complained about the similarity.

She was featured in Billboard’s “14 Artists to Watch in 2014”, and landed the cover of The Fader for its 91st issue, with her debut album LP1 being lauded for its ability to be potently charming and ethereal.

Check out her latest video, Two Weeks below.

Signature Look: FKA twigs is undeniably known for her throwback baby hair, gelled down in tiny spirals. The rest of her hair is generally pulled back in tight braids, or buns, allowing her edges to remain the main attraction of her features.
