This week we’re taking a look at women of color with stand-out style and of course how their hair plays into their style.

Up until she was about age 14, Julia Sarr-Jamois, fashion editor of Wonderland Magazine, wore her hair in plaitsWhen she decided to wear it out, she at first felt it looked really big, but stuck with it and never looked back. The half Senegalese half French fashion blog favorite is equally known for her statement hair as well as her statement clothing. She describes her style as relaxed and “follows no rules.” She’s big on mixing, whether it be prints, textures or even occasions. But she also has a big love for sportswear; you’ll frequently spot her in sweatshirts and sneakers. She doesn’t wear any make up and keeps her hair out and free because it’s easy to maintain and she rarely has time to get ready. Her advice to fellow fashionistas, “Wear everything you like, and that makes you feel good. Have fun!”

We’ve picked out our favorite Julia looks below. Which ones would you rock?

She discussed her hair and makeup with Vogue:

When I wake up in the morning, my hair just kind of bounces back into place. It really never changes. If it’s warm in the summer, I’ll tie it up into a high ponytail with an elastic band. Otherwise, it can get quite hot—it’s like I’m wearing one of those fuzzy Prada hats from the fall collection.

…I wash it with Bumble and Bumble Tonic shampoo, which smells so good. And a more intense Bumble and Bumble conditioner called Creme de Coco Masque. Then I let it air-dry and maybe play around with it for a bit with my hands. That’s it. People are always asking about it, though. And everyone wants to touch it.

…I’ve never really been into makeup. My hair is my statement, along with my clothes. I love prints and colors and texture. I like to have a bit of fun with what I’m wearing and not be too serious. I guess it’s the same with my hair.

Sarr dabbled in modeling early on, but left it behind to do something more creative.

She told Yoox, “I also like stealing iconic pieces from men’s closets such as white shirts, blazers or cashmere jumpers. Wear these borrowed-from-the-boys pieces with a mini-dress, heels and show your legs to look more feminine in them.”

One of our favorite things about Julia is she wears her afro on a wide range of occasions from casual to formal wear. She effortlessly makes it work with any ensemble.
