Question:

I have fine hair. It’s about 3B with 2C hair. So I went completely natural (no heat) in April. I really love being natural; it’s just for me! But I can’t do certain hairstyles because of my lack of thickness. I can’t do bantu knots for example. Or if I do two-strand twists, it comes out crazy and stringy and weird. So I wanted to ask: What hairstyles can someone with thin fine hair rock? And How can I make my thin fine hair grow longer (or faster)? What products should I use or avoid?

Answer:

I’d recommend doing rod sets on your hair with flexi/hotdog rollers; they usually give a fuller look. Also, try tousle drying your hair with a blowdryer and setting it in puffier state. Use a cream based natural hair product after you dry it, like My DNA hair butter and set your bantu knots overnight. You also want to use products with words like “volumizing” and “thickening.” Products like these are great for plumping up the hair, giving a fuller look.

Also, being natural doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate a little extra help. Get some clip-ins made in your texture from Heat Free Extensions, Glam Luxe Hair or Extensions Plus by Kim Kimble.  They all have great tight curly textures. You might only need 2-3 pieces to add in the top or middle for fullness. You can also set the hair in the same technique as your natural hair and clip-in in the morning or when you go out.
