  • On March 8th, the eagerly anticipated Oz The Great and Powerful hits theaters nationwide. Although there have been several adaptations to this timeless tale, we’re most excited about this installment because it comes to us in the form of a prequel; not to mention boasts an all star cast, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz, to name a few.
  • Although we we’re pretty late tuning in, The Real Hollywood Husbands which airs on BET is definitely laugh-out-loud, must-see TV. The hilarious comedy started out as a sketch during the BET Awards and was soon developed into a scripted reality show. We ran into one of the stars of the show, Boris Kodjoe at a recent event in NYC where he mentioned the show has already been picked up for three more seasons! YESS!! Tune in Tuesdays at 10pm.
  • Speaking of Boris Kodjoe, he and singer Kelly Rowland recently hosted BET’s Rip The Runway which taped last month and airs later THIS month on March 20th (check local listings for times).

  • There’s been a lot of buzz around legendary music executive Clive Davis’ new autobiography, The Soundtrack of my life (Simon & Schuster). We were sold and eager to read more when he came out as bisexual on the Katie Couric show some weeks back. Who knew? The book covers all the music icons Davis discovered and nurtured over the years, including the late Whitney Houston, singer Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Bob Dylan and more.
  • “Ghana Must Go” – a novel by Taiye Selasi (The Penguin Press) – is at once a portrait of a modern family, and an exploration of the importance of where we come from to who we are. In a sweeping narrative that takes us from Accra to Lagos to London to New York, Ghana Must Go teaches that the truths we speak can heal the wounds we hide. The book hits book shelves on March 5th. We enjoy explorations of the African Diaspora in any form.

  • If in New York City, try to make your way to the Great White Way to catch one our favorite actors of all time, Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) in his Broadway debut Luck Guy, the final play of the late Nora Ephron (Julie & Julia). Previews start on March 1st and opens on April 1st at the Broadhurst Theatre. Tickets are now on sale. We’ll be first in line…love anything Tom Hanks!
  • Also opening on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre is Motown The Musical which just sounds like a good time waiting to happen. The show charts Berry Gordy’s journey to heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross and the Supremes, Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Marvin Gaye and many more. Tickets are already on sale! Run don’t walk to this one.

  • Cool new band alert! After catching them perform for the first time on SNL a couple weeks ago, we fell in love with Alabama Shakes, a southern rock band fronted by a curly-haired GIRL whose voice has soul. We especially love these two tracks: “Always Alright” and “Hold On” off their debut album “Boys & Girls”. Their drummer is also super cute! Check them out.
  • Thanks to Hip-Hop superstar Drake, everyone is now claiming that they Started from the Bottom which happens to be the title of his latest single currently burning up the airwaves and popping up as meems on social media. We must admit, it’s a catchy track! The single is currently available on iTunes.

  • Try beer-infused cocktails! Although beer purists may disagree, bartenders and foodies are starting to experiment with cocktails by adding malted ingredients. As with wine, beer has its own science and can be transformed into different variations. We tried a beer cocktail the other day and really enjoyed the taste, so here’s a fun recipe to try at home for girl’s night:

Strawberry Fields:

1 fresh strawberry, quartered

5 mint leaves, plus more for garnish

1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice

1/2 ounce agave nectar

11/2 ounces hibiscus vodka (see below)

1 ½ Beer

4 ounces saison

Instructions: Muddle the strawberry and mint with the lemon juice and agave nectar until strawberry is completely macerated. Add vodka and ice, shake 5 times (not enough to crush the ice). Add beer and shake 5 times. Pour, with the ice, into a tulip glass and garnish with a sprig of mint.

  • Catch a parade! In March, no matter where you live, you have your choice of taking in a St. Patrick’s Day parade or perhaps if the lucky Irish isn’t your thing, an Easter parade – which is a pretty big deal in NYC. Talk about Easter bonnets galore lining 5th Avenue as far as the eye can see! This year, St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17th and Easter Sunday falls on March 31st.
